A local dealer has a 540 MF combine sitting on his lot for 3 years. 4 row head and grain head and been asking 6500 dollars. Real clean machine and I know he would take a lot less. Is this a good machine for a small farmer like me which means about 65 acres corn and 65 acres beans. Thanks for any replies.

I don't know about a 540 MF, but I do have a 550MF combine with a 4-row cornhead and a 13 ft flex head for sale that would work well for you, if interested.

I'm not familiar with that color, but at auctions here they don't bring $1000 with heads. Heck, JD 4400's barely get $1000 with a bean head. Don't know where you live, but the market is soft for used ombines, & real soft for small ones.

Hi ... been around MF combines all of my life. Between my dad and I we have had about nine of them. I farm small too. Had a MF 410 for a couple of years and bought a late model MF 550 last year. A MF 410 is a bigger machine than the MF 540. The cylinder width is the same but a MF 410 flares out about 6 inches on each side behind the beater for more straw walker and chaffer/sieve square inches. The 540 is not much of a combine especially in heavy corn and hills. They have a hard time selling them in Iowa. One last fall brought $1000 on a farm sale and it ran and looked good. I know of a dealer that has had one sitting on his lot for 3 - 4 years too ... piece of junk. I know a farmer here that had a MF 540 ... he said he combined part way up the hill and backed down quickly to get the corn through the sieves. Honest! They use some similar drive styles as the MF 300. Good luck ... sitting in the rain and snow doesn't help.

Sitting out side for 3 years? I would stay away from it. The 540 is a piece a junk.
