...posted a while back that I found an old gleaner in the woods behind an ex-farmers house. I paid $250.00 for it. He couldn't remember, but thought it was an E or EIII, I thought it was a K. FOund out yesterday on closer inspection that is actually a G model. Could someone tell me what year the G was manufactured and was as other interesting data (engine size etc.)?

The old Gleaners were good combines. I had an AII that was a fun little machine to run in the field. Had to watch though, the clutches were touching and if it was let out to fast while in reverse there was a good chance of bring the rear off the ground! No matter which engine you have, they all were good dependable motors. Outside of normal wear and tear...the only problem I've ever come acrossed with the old Gleaners is that as the shifter gets worn you have to be carefull. Sometimes if you were not carefull you think your in neutral but actually you still in gear. Good luck with your Gleaner.

More details... 301 cu in 6 cyl Allis 2800 gas engine, grey block 68 & 69, red block later. After ser 17001 used a 350 Chevy rated @ 120 hp. Also in available in LP or with 2900 Diesel series @ 109 HP. 100 Bu grain tank standard or 130 bu with extensions. Believe it was the first to unload @ 100 bu/min. Up to 23 Ft. grain head. Built from "68 to "72. The F model used the 262 engine and the F-2 the Chev 292.
The 2800 gas engine was a super engine, in all the years we ran them we never had a bit of trouble with them and they were economical on fuel.(at one time I had 10 G"s with this engine)
Another Clarence...

Just curious, if you had as many as 10 Gleaner G's, were you a custom harvester or dealer?

Just a farmer who loved the G's. Cropped 2500 acres and bought just about every one that came along.. used of course... I would add one or two a year and completely rebuild them in the winter in our shop. We only ran five at a time. Had five with pickup heads, five with grain heads, and 3 flex heads for peas. Ten machines had the 6 cyl engine and two had the 350 chev. Of the 12 machines two were used for parts. Back then harvest was a family affair and we had a lot of fun and a very economical harvest. Did a little custom work, mainly to help out neighbours.

Clarence, that sounds really great. I for one, would love to get an old G. A great-uncle of mine had a 1968 model, the first year the G was made. His son claimed to have had a lot of serious problems with the machine. It's hard to tell, though whether the combine really had a lot of factory-related bugs, or if it was just mistreated on the farm. My second cousin was rather hard on machinery. I really wanted that old G, but my cousin sold it down the road to someone else. I have no idea as to its whereabouts or if it is even still around at all.

So do you still have any G's? I think Gleaners are as good as any combines ever made.

Clarence,

If the G you bought was a diesel, then you have 301 ci motor (possibly turboed I.e 190xt/200 tractor motor. I've also seen them with a 250ci Chevy straight six or the straight six AC gas motor (i think its 262 ci but not sure)!
Good Luck.

Clarence, I really hope you can make the old Model G run again! It was the largest of all the Baldwin style Gleaners. The cylinder is 44 inches wide, putting it right in league with the Massey-Ferguson 510,M-M 4296, IHC 503 and very close to the John Deere 105!

The Model G was produced from 1968 through 1972. I can still even remember the transition from the G to the Model L's, and how some professional custom harvester were more than happy to run G's right along with their new L's. Well, for most of those first L's, the going was not as good as with the G's.

Long live the Gleaner G!

I hear ya,

The most I ever farmed was around 700 acres a year.

Those darned Gs were just too big for me; they were one hungry outfit! :>)

Allen, if you still have around 700 acres or even just half of that, now, I would not turn away even a Gleaner G needing a good home in your area. Yes, they are big for even a small farm, but they are not so monstrous they can't be comfortable with only 40 to 80 acres of this or that to harvest. They will just do it in a much shorter time than a Model A, John Deere 45 or 55, or whatever is out there. Oh well, once upon a time, even our custom harvesters ran the Gleaner C, John Deere 55, M-H 27 and IHC 151...and called it good.

Clarence,

60s model. Pretty good sized machine back in those days, although not as big as the later Ls.

Took a standard 20' grain table and was probably 'round 100 horse or so.
