battery will not stay charged

I have a Massey Ferguson "2722" made by Simplicity. It has a 22 horse Briggs Vanguard engine. With a fully charged battery, new this spring, it will mow for 2 hours and then not start. I put the trickle charger on it and am going to charge it overnight for a fully charged battery and then check the charging output in the morn. Possibility #1 The charging circuit does not put out enough to charge the battery and pull the electric clutch while mowing. Possibility #2 The electric clutch is bad and drawing too much juice.Possibility #3 the charging circuit is bad. Does anyone have any thoughts or input?
 
First thing check your owners manual for a wiring diag,if none found or you don't have manual,starting at eng,check for a fuse installed by briggs & check for a fuse in wiring harness installed by tractor mfg for alt output,same may blown,if no fuse found,connect a voltmeter to battery,start eng,with eng running at full throttle,voltage should start to rise to 14.5v,if voltage doesn't change when eng runnning,problem in charging system,if this is the case,buy a service/repair manual that covers your mod eng,from briggs website,local sealer or ebay,briggs used 7 different charging systems on vanguard eng,single,dual tri,regulated,unregulated in amp output range of 5-20A,you'll need service manual to id system you have on eng & do troubleshooting tests for system you have as per manual,you might want to check with local simplicity dealer for a wiring diag(if you don't have)and also current draw on clutch coil,most draw 3-5A,but vary by clutch mfg.
 
I checked the system this morning with a battery tester. Battery checked out great. Started the engine voltage slowly climbed 13, 13.5, 14, 15 , 16 ,17 Off the gauge! I took the voltage regulator to the shop and it checked out bad. None in stock, they ordered it in. Thanks for the advice on checking the system.
