This may not be the correct forum, but I thought somebody on here might be able to help me. A friend has just been given his papaw's old riding lawn mower. It is a Wizard with 7hp and a 30 inch cutting deck. It does not run, but is in nice condition except for some minor surface rust. He asked me to post these questions as he does not have a computer. Can parts be obtained and where? Are these machines collectable. Would they be worth restoring. He said his papaw said it was early 60's.Thank you.

I have contacted the local Western Auto store, but they said they did not know who the manufacture was. I need to get an owners manual and parts list for an 18/39, model dyk7117b88.

Any response would be appreciated.

Wow. Youv'e got great replies from experienced people. My nine acre field is cut with a Farmall 300 with a seven foot king kutter brush hog, and I am amazed at the quality of the cut. I used a DR field and brush mower, classic style, no longer made, and this would cut the field, but at 1 acre per 2 hrs. I tried a Sears lawn tractor, 18 horse Kohler and it couldn't take the bumps. The lens on the hood cracked, the hinges cracked and the deck fell off. Sears warranteed it though. In the future I might try a skag walk behind or AC B with a belly mower as suggested by others. A zero turn would cut fast and excellent but the field would have to be flat (rolling would help) with no rocks, and the grass not too tall. Most of these are finish mowers. There are many different solutions but I haven't found it yet. Good luck.

I would consider anything that was my grandfather's worth restoring. As a collectable, I would say it's not worth it. As something to cherish, I would spend as much as it took. I'm not sure who made the Wizard tractors. If you're not familiar, they were sold by Western Auto, so that would be a start.

CJ-- These machines were sold by Western Auto Supply stores all over the U.S., I would start looking for one of them.
