So, father in law told me what approximate area to look in (the barn is filled with all kinds of stuff) and after some digging around found this:

It is a delco remy model number 1101989 Serial number 6021 (or 7) - 12 volt - I can see where the two mounting bolts match up - cannot work out where lower bracket attaches.

Does anyone know what size belt this takes?
Also is there a way of bench testing the genny?

Starter- gen? You can bench test by touching battery cables to one or other stub, ground to frame so clip negative to the mount bolt. one stub is starter, other is generator. Delco made clockwise and counterclockwise rotation- can"t remember which number is which. Cubs are opposite turn from Simplicity 725 I think. The regulator/switch is needed for both use- has 4 or 5 wires. RN.

Bench testing the "starter" part of it is easy. Just hook a battery to it and see if it spins. But that does not mean the charging part of it works. They usually stop charging first (and still crank).

The lower bracket is used to keep your belt tightened and there should be a place on the head or block to fasten it. Here's a pic of my S/G on my Wards tractor. Mine has a different bracket that is slotted. I use the Gates 1370 belt which is their Green Stripe. This is a 14hp B&S engine. I use a car battery for starting the tractor. I use the battery with side connections that I bought from Walmart 8 years ago. I would have your S/G checked to make sure its charging before installing it. It may need brushes and bearings. I had mine rebuilt last year cost about $50.00. That's 37 years of use. Hal

Thank you, tested it and it spins - so will have to see if it charges

I have re-connected everything - the strap did indeed connect to part of the shroud of the engine underneath.

I have a wiring question though - the black wire that runs from the ignition switch is supposed to go to the engine magneto ground terminal - where is this located on my Briggs and stratton engine? Its a long wire so thinking it should run back up to the top of the engine somewhere.

Thanks,

lee

The place to hook on the engine should be somewhere around where I put the X on the photo. On that side of the engine, there is a wire the comes from behind the engine flywheel and probably attaches to a threaded stud with a nut on it (if the nut isn't missing). The shut-off wire from the ignition switch goes onto the post on the engine - so it connects to the wire that comes from behind the flywheel.

Great diagram - thanks very much will check it out. I see that the switch is 3 way - I should be looking for ground at off from that post then run where the genny should be producing a charge from the field post and then start where there should be power going to it to the A post?

Need to search and find key.
