I have aJohn Deere LX188 tractor/lawn mower/snow blower. I purchased it new about 1992. It has been and remains in good operating condition. However, the last few months when I am mowing and I disengage the mower I can not reengage the mower unless I let the engine cool down. What is the problem?

pto clutch coil is weak
heat makes it worse that y its ok at first
heat from engine is most likly breaking it down
get a new clutch
good luck gary

The air gap between the electric clutch members has widened due to normal wear to the point that when the electromagnet windings are hot, they can't produce enough magnetic strength to pull the clutch together. When the magnetic coil cools off, the resistance in the winding goes down, then the it can overcome the gap. You can adjust the air gap to bring it back into spec. On the outside of the clutch, there are 3 threaded studs with springs and lock nuts on them. On the rotating part of the clutch above the pulley, you will find a small window that allows you to insert a .015" feeler gauge in between the clutch members. Position that window so it is close to one of the studs, then tighten the lock nut on the stud until you can slide the feeler gauge in between the plates with a little drag. Do this same procedure at all three stud locations. Your clutch will probably now work fine when hot. If it does not, only then will you have to replace the clutch.
