John Deere 140 H1

I have several older large John Deere tractors but I have a few questions since this is my first "garden tractor". Purchased this 140 the other day from a 94 year old guy that just entered a nursing home, he bought it new in 1974, serial number 064221M, he worked at the john deere dealer for 40 years and told me it was one the the last 50 made so they sold it to him and gave him a deal since the new model 300 was coming out. Every 140 I have ever seen has headlights but this came from the factory without headlights...did some come without lights? Is this a 1974?

Also, the tractor has been in his shed for 15 years, I cleaned it up, changed the oil and sparkplug and it started right up.

Everything seems to work, my other question is about the deck. The deck has a model number (H117L). Is this a 48" or 50" deck and is it original to the tractor?

Comments appreciated, thank you.

According to the chart at http://www.weekendfreedommachines.com/ 1974 production started with #56,501. No last production number is shown.

Headlights were an option.

I don't recognize that model #. The typical 46" deck was a model 48 and the 50" deck available later was a #50.

Ask over on the "weekend" site. They can probably decode the "H117L" for you.

Not sure about the deck but you probably have one of the last few THOUSAND 140's.
So far the serial numbers in the 140 registry have kind of maxed out in the 68,000 range and yours is in the 64,000.
Nobody knows the serial number of the last 140....so far.

Good strong garden tractor considered JD's best!

That H117L is an odd number. You might have a 41 inch deck.

The 48 inch deck had no code number but was model BM17879.

The 50 inch deck had code 1013M and model number BM16377.
