What do I have to do to get my old craftsman with 15 hp ohv briggs to run smooth?continues to surge no matter how Iset the governor, also dies when I try to slow it down What is the purpose of the solinoid(sp) on the bottom of bowl????//////

The sol on bottom of carb bowl is a fuel shutoff/anti-backfire device, when ign sw turned to off/stop plunger releases in sol, shutting gas off to main jet in carb, preventing gas vapor from being drawn into cyl when ign killed & eng coasting down, preventing vapor from being ignited by hot internal parts, carbon or muffler causeing backfire when eng stops or right after stopping, also prevents run-on,your most probable cause of surgeing is dirt in low-speed/idle passages & dirt in float needle seat, causeing a flooding condition, another thing you might want to check is valve clearances & possibly for a leaking/blown head gasket

Thanks Joe,also concerned that when I had carb off ,might have gotten carb choke cables back wrong.Noone around here to ask

Many surging problem are caused by a plugged idle mixture circuit in the carb. Clean the carb well. If this does not help you may need to enlarge the idle mixture passages. THIS IS NOT FOR A NOVICE. The only other way to fix is to buy a new carb.

Goto briggs website with mod & type#'s of eng and see if you can download a service/repair manual for eng,if not buy a briggs service manual(pn#272147) at briggs website, local dealer or ebay(paper/cd)in governor section it will show/tell you how to conn/setup gov & throttle plate,as briggs used 2-3 different gov assemblys & 2 different throttle plates, depending on age/style of eng.
