Working on a friends 22x and heres the problem. Tractor starts fines and runs good for about 15min till it gets warm and dies. You can start it back up right away but runs like crap and have to put the choke on. I cleaned out the gas tank and made sure the gas cap was venting. Put new fuel line on and made sure it was not close to the exhaust for vapor lock reasons. He has a 12 volt coil on it and I though maybe the coil was getting hot. Or maybe it needs a carb kit. Has a 10hp kohler. Any help would be great. Thank you

In some of the fuel tanks used on Case tractors, there is a filter in the tank outlet. Most owners eliminate it and then use an in-line filter. This is something that you may wish to check.

The setting of the valves are very important on these K engines. In the interest of leaving no stone unturned, go to Kohler's website and download the service manual (free) for the engine and set those valves correctly.

Also, the points setting can make the engine run rough so make sure that the points are dead flat and properly set. If the points look bad, replace them. And condensors can also make an engine run very bad. Put a new condensor on it.

If you are certain that the coil is a true 12 volt model that does not need an external ballast resistor, then exhaust the other items first. If you have another engine around with a coil that is known to be good, then you could swap in order to eliminate the coil. Sometimes a coil does not have to get really warm in order to start breaking down internally. Assume nothing. Suspect everything.

If the engine runs really well when started from cold, then the carb should not be the issue. However, it never hurts to remove the float bowl and make sure it's totally clean. If this is a fuel starvation issue, then I'd be taking a hard look at the fuel pump. One way to check it is to use an old fuel tank from another engine.

Remove the fuel line from the carb. Remove the fuel line leading to the fuel pump and plug it for now. Run a new hose from the donor gas tank to the carb on the Kohler and put a pint of fresh fuel into the donor tank. Start up the Kohler and let it run. If it never quits, then the fuel pump is most likely the problem if you have exhausted all other issues with the original tank and line.

I would also check to make sure that the correct spark plug is in the engine and that it is not worn out or gapped incorrectly. A plug of the wrong heat range can create issues too.

This is fixable by doggedly eliminating one potential issue at a time.
