Cub Cadet 1225 w/Peerless 800 transaxle - sticks in gear

Dad picked up this tractor from a neighbor in hopes of fixing it up to seel. The tractor came to him with a broken shift lever, which he was able to weld back together. the previous owner told him that the tractor runs fine, but sticks in gear. We replaced the transmission belt, as it was a bit taught even with the clutch engaged. The new belt has sufficient slack in it, and the allow the transaxle to be "unloaded". This didn't solve the problem. the mower can be placed in gear prior to starting up the mower, you can motor around in that gear without any noise/problems, abut shifting out of gear is impossible without shutting the tractor down, and sometime rocking the tractor.

We pulled the transaxle apart and inspected for damage. with the exception of a couple of nicked shift keys (probably from attempting to ram the unit between gears that ultimately broke the shift lever) everything looked good. No wear/breakage in the gears or sprokets. the keyways were perfect and everything was sufficiently lubed. There was no play in the input shaft. We replaced the shift keys, cleaned out the old lube and re-lubed with the recommended amount of Bentonite grease. dad reassemble everything yesterday and took it out for a test ride and nothing has changed...says it will shift when the until is off, but not once the engine runs...we're at a loss - the transmission belt is slack, and there is no "pwer" to the tranny - what gives? :x

we have a couple of ideas of things to try, but they seem to be shots in the dark (going to disconnect brake to see if perhaps brake is misadjusted and engaging before clutch has unloaded transaxle, causing binding...also will check torque on transaxle case bolts - dad's torque wrench was "mis-filed" when we put the case back together, but he has managed to locate it...)

Does anybody have any suggestions? Any and all guidance is deeply appreciated.

Make sure that the clutch is completly releasing and putting enough slack on the belt. Sounds kind of like trying to put a stickshift automobile in a higher gear with the motor reved up too much for it. It then starts grinding . Sounds sort of like it's not syncronizing right . It could just need adjusting like my Murray has an adjustment just for that purpose. But you stated that you have already done that , so at least check to see if the belt is routed right . Also check to see that there's not a lose or bent bracket or shifter rod. Also check to see that no bolts have come out allowing it to twist and bind up. I could be wrong but I don't think that the torque on the bolts has anything to do with it.I enclosed a link to you transmission breakdown . Does it look anything like yours ? If the link does not work go to - www.cubcadet.com and then click on parts and then put your model number in the box under - Don't know your part # " on the right - and click search. When that page comes up ,go under details and click on illustrated parts list and then scroll down to transaxel. And then check under trans. controls. I looked there and I saw a linkage adjustment on it. But make sure that this illustration looks identical to yours. Click on different sections in the list on the left to see other breakdown on your mower . Let me know if you get it fixed and what the problem was .

Maybe the syncronizers are going bad ,also . That is , if they have them in lawnmower transmissions . I'm no expert on internal lawnmower transmission parts , but I'd say that they have them in someway , to some extent .

I forgot to say last night that there is a chance that the shifter fork could be bent just a " hair " if the shifter lever was forced into a gear . But it might be so slight that you can't really tell it. But still be bent enough to throw it off.

Thanks I'll check this out over the weekend. We we planning to pull the transaxle apart again to double check things. I appreciate your suggestions.
