Would you believe it....well, probably not as the blade has likely been on the mower for 15 years or so....but, managed to shear off the bolt trying to remove it.
So, what now? Can I drill out the remainder of the bolt remove the seating plate that the blade goes on and try to remove the bolt that way?

This is for an old Lawn Chief high wheel mower......I probably have spent waaay too long messing with this so far, but now its a matter of pride....

Yes. Been there done that. You'll probably need a good puller to get that blade hub off. When you get the blade hub off you should have room to work. It's probably a soft bolt, so drill the center of the bolt and then use an easy-out. PB Blaster is your friend.

Were you turning it CCW? If you can get the plate off and there's some of the broken bolt exposed, put some heat on that bolt stub. Then use a pair of vice grips to see if you can remove the bolt CCW. Hal
PS: If can get it out you may need to chase the threads with a tap. Install a Grade 8 cap screw.

Yep, I was turning it ccw - I think it was just rusted in there so tight when I put a bit of torque on it it broke.

The thing I am kicking myself about now is that actually, I probably could have sharpened the blade with my grinding tool whilst on its side....Doh

If some stub is visible, try mig welding a nut to the stub, than use a wrench on the nut. I've fixed several car exhaust manifolds using that trick. If you must drill, accurately locate, and center punch stub, use a 1/16" Cobalt drill bit and a slow speed drill. Be sure drill is aquare with stub, angle drilling will break bit.

Groan, goes from bad to worse.....close to covering it up and leaving it behind the barn. Managed to damage the bottom of the spindle to the point where I doubt I can use it again - so, now looking for source for old parts for this mower to see if I can get the pulley, spindle and blade mounting parts. If anyone has any ideas would be most grateful - this is for the old lawn chief walk behind mower with the briggs and stratton engine which drives a belt to front pulley - I need the pulley, spindle and bottom mounting hardware for blade. I am kicking myself hard because I could have just sharpened the blade on the mower in place....dont know why I tried to remove it...thought the thing would come off ok. I am super frustrated with myself for not thinking and rushing which has left me with a useless mower now. I got it for free but still, managed to bugger it up rather than getting it going.
