The travel lever rod has a small rod that sticks out the side of it just below the dashboard. That second rod rubs up against a serrated plastic block that serves two purposes. First of all, it's the neutral safety switch and secondly the serrations help keep the travel lever where you want it while using the tractor. Over time, the serrations wear off and that means you need to replace the neutral safety switch.

Depending upon the year of the tractor, some switches are tougher to change out than others. So that you understand this better, you need to view two different sites. Get the serial number of your tractor off of the metal plate that is riveted on the dash tower and then use the link below.

When you reach the home page, click on "Illustrated Parts Lists" and then scroll down to the 222 tractors. Look for the PDF that contains the serial number of your tractor and then click on it. You can either print that book or just download it to a file on your hard drive.

The drawings will show you the travel lever, the small rod on the side of it and the neutral safety switch. It will also show you the lower part of the travel lever where there is a spring hooked onto a bracket that is welded to the travel rod. That spring is tied into the parking brake pedal. When ever you step on the parking pedal, that spring is there to pull the travel lever into the neutral position.

Make sure that your parking brake is working properly and releasing completely or the travel lever will be constantly fighting the spring pressure.

The other site can be found at www.casegardentractors.com which is an on-line store for Case parts. Go to the electrical section and you will see what a neutral safety switch looks like. A picture is worth a 1000 words.
