I recently picked up a Craftsman YT 16 44" riding mower for free due to a steering issues according to the previous owner. The steering issue has been taken care of by degreasing and putting new grease on the spindles. The deck is shot and has plenty of holes in it, so this will be a play toy at best.
I would like to know how old this unit is if possible. The model number is 917.255820 with a serial number of 0795 S04466. Any help that can be provided would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advnace for your time

If a Briggs engine, check the CODE number on the engine. The first two numbers are the YEAR the engine was built. The next two are the MONTH. You can come close with, if you have them, these numbers.

go to sears.com and click on partsdirect, type in model number and can follow link to owners manual. just in case you dont have one and need it, is a printable version i think.

To best of my knowledge there is not an "open" list of Sears number decoding, other than the prefixes. In your case "917." indicates yours is AYP(American Yard Products)built, the major supplier of Sears tractors for several years now/
There is some indication that first digits of AYP serial no is open date code(in your case 07/95)however I cannot confirm this info.As said below,Engine date code(if original)would be a good indicator.
