Craftsman high wheel trimmer mow ball replacement

I have an older craftsman high wheel trimmer - 917-773422 - the mow ball needs to be replaced as the old one sheered off its mount (the plastic part only) I have the new one ready to replace but having a devil of a job doing so. There is a bolt at the bottom with what looks like a hex nut - but this is very shallow and nothing seems to grip in it - am I doing the right thing by trying to remove that bottom nut? Can I cut away the old plastic without damaging anything?
Hope this is enough information to get an answer - I have a feeling there might be a bearing in there which is seized up as the plastic part does not rotate much - it is soaking up some PB Blaster at the moment.

As I recall the bolt that you speak of is an Allen head capscrew, left hand thread if I recall correctly. You may cut away the plastic and popssibly get a vice grips on it, or a small chisel and work it out carefully. When all else fails that piece is available as a complete unit from Sears as well as MTD. Good Luck

Thanks, the allen head seems very shallow and I cannot get an allen key to seat well in it - I will try carefully cutting the plastic away with my dremmel tool.

thanks,

Ah ha! That makes sense. I could not work out why they would make a retaining nut with such a shallow depth for the allen key to go in.
