bantam tractors

The last two issures of Antique Power Magazine has an article on a restored American Austin tractor.  American Austin Co went Bankrupt and was purchased by another invester and renamed Bantam Co.  Perhaps the two tractors are related.  The engine in the Austin is British, thus uses Whitworth system hardware, inch or metric wrenches will not work.

No i dont think this was them. This compant was in lebanon ind. about 20 min north of me. i havent found any info on them buying any one. I think they did build a 2 seater car though.

Bantam Tractors

Yes, there was the Bantam Car Company! Located in Butler, PA. It was formerly known as the Austin Company, later changed to American Austin. They built little cars, and later built the first prototype for the Army, which became the Jeep! But, since the Bantam car factory was small, they couldn't build the Jeeps fast enough, so the govment gave the designs to Ford and Chrysler, who could build great numbers of the Jeeps!
The Bantam tractor was a very small tractor, like a lawn tractor. It had usually, a 3 h.p. engine in it.
A version of the Bantam Tractor was built to be used as an amusement park, or carnival ride. It had a 3 h.p. engine, an "in-out" handle that put it in gear, no reverse, and "nerf bars" to keep the kiddies from getting too close to another tractor. I had one. It was way too slow for anything except as the park ride. Although, i used it to tow yard carts, etc.
The Bantam Car Company built a Roadster, and a Coupe. They were nifty little cars, but not very peppy. An eccentric fellow near me had a coupe that he kept in his old barn. I tried to buy it, but he always said he was "Going to restore it some day", but the barn eventually fell in and crushed it flat as a pancake!
