briggs $ stratton rebuild

I have an old briggs 8hp that lacks compression. When ordering replacement piston, rings, what size do I order? .010 larger than stock? I have access to cylinder hone, and feeler guage, but don't have a way to measure cylinder width.

Depends on how loose it is. Most of the time if it is worn enought to need .010 rings, it needs a .010 piston also, otherwise you will get piston slap and can break a piston skirt.

You need to get it to someone who can measure bore properly otherwise you're just throwing money away guessing what size to use.

Before you replace rings, pistons, etc., make sure it isn't something simpler like a valve seating problem. One of my Kohler K321's with very poor compression had an exhaust valve that was in such bad shape you could see light coming through between the valve and the seat. New valve and lapping of the seat and it runs like new.

Take the block to your local auto machine shop and have them measure the bore. If its worn too much or tapered they may need to hone it oversize.
Then the piston needs to be replaced. If its not worn beyond specs you may be able use std rings. Have the crankshaft checked and the rod may be worn too. Have them to grind the valves. You need to do it right while you have it apart. Hal
