Cub Cadet 100

Hi, I'm looking for suggestions and info.
I've never owned or operated a Cub Cadet,... but tomorrow evening I'm going to look at a Cub Cadet 100 with the intent of buying it.
I talked to the owner this evening, and he said the 10 HP motor has been overhauled (last year) due to haveing been in a flood. He says it runs great, and he has repainted it. He owns a body shop, so I think he probaly did a good job of painting it.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what else to check (or look for) before handing over my $500.00?

Thanks,
Spotted Horse

They can be nice tractors. I'd check for steering looseness, spindles, clutch work OK, brakes OK. Let the engine warm up good and listen for engine noises. Is there a deck? Is it charging?
$500 is on the high side but if it's in nice shape I'd buy it.

Thanks, I'll check all those things when I go to see it this evening,... and,
yes, it has a deck.

The owner told me over the phone, that the front tires are new, and the back tires have good tread, but are a little weather-checked.
It's a 120 mile round-trip to go look at this little tractor, and I've always wanted a Cub Cadet.
Thanks again for your reply,

If it was in a flood ask about rearend oil being changed / flushed out also. $500.00 does sound about tops for a 100 but it really depends on what "options" it has such as fenders, lights, 3pt hitch, creeper gear , etc. All of these things add to the price and are really worth more than the tractor itself.

Bottom line. If it looks good, runs and operates good and you are happy with the price then it's worth it. The 100 is a nice tractor and if you take of it it'll last the rest of your life.

It has fenders, and a 4 speed tranny, but I don't think it has lights or any other extras.
Would it still be worth $500.00 if it runs good?

Thanks,

The fenders are worth about $125. If everything else checks out, it's worth $500.

I have one with a 12 hp Kohler and wouldn't sell it for $500.....

Well, I bought it. :)
...., but it's needs a little TLC.
It's needs some new bushings in the front axle, and the return spring for the clutch is weak. Other then that, it seems to be in pretty good shape and runs good.

The tranny is NOT a 4-speed (like the guy told me), but is a 3-speed.

Any suggestions on where to find the bushings?

Congratulations !
It should be a 3 speed trans. the only cubs with 4 speeds are later models and are belt driven.

Not sure what you mean by bushing in front axle ?? Most old Cubs have some amount of play - some can be taken out fairly easy and other well......

" Clutch return spring weak" probably means it's time for new clutch, springs , etc. but may be simple adjustment .

Now that you've purchased a Cub download or purchase the Operator's Manual , Repair manual & Parts manuals. They are an excellant investment and you'll be glad you did. Then have some FUN ! Just watch out - once the bugs bites you it's hard to stop gathering these things up for your next project !!!

Actually it was the fella I bought the Cub from, that said the "clutch return spring was weak",... he used those words to explain why I needed to pull the clutch pedal "up" with my toe in order for the clutch to engage.

He's also the one that said the front axle "needed bushings".

Over the next couple of days I might start 2nd. guessing if I should have bought this little tractor,.... but hey, I did need a winter-project, and tomorrow I'll get a better look at my new "toy" in the daylight. LOL
