JD Hydo 185 Slipping

Its groaning because it needs replaced! Its tired, and seeking a good place to set and relax. Ya might as well bite the bullet, and either buy a new tractor, or buy a new tranny!
A friend had me haul his JD to a place where they said they could fix the groaning. I had told him it was a rip-off, but he didn't think i knew anything, so he told them to fix it, but no new tranny! I knew it wouldn't be any better, because his yard is hilly, and steep, and his tractor was 11 years old.
So, they took his cash, and i hauled it back home for him. The fix lasted one month, and it was off to the repair shop for a new tranny!

Its time for a new tranny
Deere offers rebuilt ones that are cheaper
There are 2 styles Eaton an Sunstrand used on 185s
Way to tell them apart is Eaton has cooling fan on side an Sunstrand is on top
A tractor junk yard may be considered for a replacement tranny
Good luck Gary

This is only a quick fix,but might get you going for a while. Drain some of the transmission oil, and replace it with STP oil treatment. I've done this several times and it lasted for a while.

I've been successful in buying some time for worn out hydros such as yours sounds to be by draining and refilling with a heavier weight oil. I think a multi-vis oil may even be a good idea. It takes a bit of patients to refill one, but it can be done. Rememeber to keep everything cleaner than your dinner plate!

I don't think Multi Weight oil belongs in anything short of a car ! In order for multi Weight to become thicker than 0 wt, it must be heated, and pressurized. A higher vicosity oil may do the trick [ for awhile ] I don't understand why so many people insist on using multi weight Oil in small engines. May be OK in pressurized engines like the B+S Vanguard, but [ to me ] are death in splash lube engines. I've asked a lot of Motorcycle riders what they use, and they tell me, either the manufacturers oil or Castrol 30 WT. Most of the ' shot rods ' [ broken con rod ] engines that come here have thin oil. I personally killed a snowblower engine when I had the Brainstorm of filling it with Mobil 1. For snowblowers I use Non Detergent 20 Wt, and a PTFE additive. At the end of the season, I drain, refill with HD 30 wt, run engine a bit, than change back to my 20 Wt / PTFE mix. This flushes out dirt buildup. I use Mobil 1 in my car, with excellent results, but will * never * put it in a small engine again !
