how to heat treat mower blades?

NOT a good project for the "do-it-yourselfer", I wouldn't thnk!


I would think messing with them would have a good chance of making them more brittle and more prone to shatter or break. NOT a good thing!
 
Do not heat treat for safety's sake! Making the edge last longer without compromising the integrity of the blade is all in the sharpening. I use a file on mine (yard mower blades) unless they are chipped out then I'll use a bench grinder. It is important not to overheat while grinding which will appear as brown, blue or black tint on metal and draws back any hardness the blade may have. After grinding I still use a file to get a nice straight edge with a consistant angle. Lastly I stone the razor sharp edge to a perfect corner. In my experience that razor sharp almost jagged edge is just an invitation for chipping and breakout.

Note: part of the solution is to look over the area about to be mowed and remove obtructions OR sucumb to continuos blade sharpening and replacement.

ok, i wasn"t sure if it would help or not, i"m always sharpening them and was hoping there was something i could do to help them stay sharp longer.
 
Like most anything these days,there are better and worse brands in blades,even sometimes within same mfg line.For example,a couple yrs back,I was asked to change out the blades on a cheaper Craftsman model.Having no Sears nearby,and the tractor/mower being an AYP build,I picked up blades at the local Husquvarna shop,Price was slightly lower,perfect fit,different AYP No,but a heavier,better blade.
Also there are blades made for special comditions,such as sandy areas,which hold up better to the sandblasting effect of such mowing.
