I was mowing the grass when forward motion ceased.
The mower continued to run.
I put it into reverse & backed up about 2 feet when it stopped again.
I put it in 1st but it wouldn't move.
I put it in reverse, no go.
The mower continued to run.
Smoke started to come out from underneath so I shut it off
With the tractor in neutral I pushed it into its shed.
Upon examination I found both the drive belts still in place.
I'm figuring that the gearbox is locked in 2 gears.
Any ideas?

Vern

Check the pulley on top of the transaxle, sometimes on John Deeres, the splines in the pulley will wear out. If you lock the brake it will release tension on the drive belt and you may be able to reach up and tell if that's what happened, or you may have to remove the fender deck to tell. It's unlikely that it is locked in two gears.

Heywood;

You were right, it was the pulley.

Thanks;
