JD 300 Levers sticking

I have a John Deere 300 that the two hydraulic levers are sticking. The outside one that lifts the deck seems to be working but sticking a little bit. The inside lever is really rough. What does it control? Whenever it slips out of the center position the tractor will jump forward and do some surging. A little help in understanding what that inside lever does would help me out a lot, and what to look for that might be broke.

Just got this tractor and I"m not very good with it yet...
Thanks
Ryan

Sounds like you have the LAWN & GARDEN JD 300 right? (There's a JD 300 Industrial full-size utility tractor also.) Anyhow, I know you are talking about the little lawn mower - LOL! (I'm a big JD guy.) The issue you are having is really simple. The inner lever is for two of the front hydraulic remotes on the front of your tractor. They are used for a front mounted plow, blower, or various other attachments that would require hydraulics. The inner control valve lever likely sticks because of its lack of use. You can lube the linkages a little as well as the bushings where the main shaft rods go through the body and framework into the control valves. Use a penetrating oil such as THRUST or PB Blaster, or Liquid Wrench, or something good. I suggest chasing it later on with some type of lithium grease or the like. An important heads up on these hydraulic systems... DO NOT let the levers stay in the engaged position for a long time. Meaning, pushed ahead or back towards you. They are intended to stay in the center or "neutral" position whenever they aren't moving an implement. Furthermore, there is likely a detent in one of the levers (I forget which one) when pushed all the way forward. This is normal, and is used for the "float" position. That position is typically used when plowing or blowing, to allow the impement to move with the contour of the land. It can be left in the forward float position for extended time without damage to the hydraulics, but still should really only be done so when a hydraulic implement is attached. May I suggest you invest in an owner's manual for your tractor! It's an invaluable learning and maintenance tool which will allow you to understand and enjoy your tractor. They can easily be obtained via your local JD dealer, or may even be ordered directly from Deere via a phone number that your JD dealer can provide you. Take your serial number with you. That will guarantee you get the correct manual, as many tractors are made with serial number breaks where running production changes are made. Good luck and enjoy your Deere. They are some of the best tractors made in the world. ~Andy

NO need to pester the dealer for manuals. Just call DEERE Techpubs @ 1-800-522-7448, with credit card in hand.
