Just bought an old Gravely 424 garden tractor. 10hp kohler, 4 wheel.

Two questions:

1) having trouble getting the range shift to stay in high gear. slips out. locks in low well. adjustment or tranny repair needed?

2) my PTO engages well, but it turns very slowly, only turning the mower deck blades at a very slow pace. As if there are two pto speeds?

Have owners manual, trying to join the yahoo group - any help appreciated. i always wanted one of these tractors, cant wait to restore.

There is a metal to metal dog type clutch in the axle for the high low range. If the teeth on the clutch get worn, they tend to ratch and slip. Usually only in high. Sounds like thats were you trouble may be. You should not shift this lever when the tractor is in motion.

For the PTO, there are 2 speeds. You should have a second lever thats labeled 1 and 2. That shifter changes your wheel speed, and your PTO speed. It can be shifted without stopping the tractor.

This tractor uses the same transmission as is used onthe 2 wheel walkbehind Gravely tractors. same one as the Model L, 500 and 5000 series.

go to www.oldgravelys.net and you can download service manuals, parts lists, and a LOT of other useful information for your tractor and its attachments.

There are also a couple links there with a few places that can get you just about every part you"ll ever neeed, and ship anywhere in the country.

Thanks for your help - still waiting to get into the gravely group at yahoo. I have the manual for my 424- and dont see where the two speed section for the PTO is - there are three levers in front of the seat - Gear, PTO in out, and Range. It seems the gear and Range both change wheel speed, and as it happens I think I have them both on high anyhow...?

any help appreciated.

Oh cancel that last post, I re- read the manual, and see that the gear 1 and 2 does affect ground speed and PTO. since i was having trouble keeping it in 2, i probably had it in 1 when I tried the mower.

thanks for your help - i will look at adjusting the clutch levers, but figure a rebuild is probably needed.
