Tuff Torq transmission problem

Can anyone tell me what might be wrong with the Tuff Torq k61 transmission on my Toro Wheel Horse tractor? We used it pretty hard this last summer hauling dirt around our new development pulling some heavy loads. It now has surges of forward drive. If you are cruising at a said speed onn the flat it has perodicsurges of energy. It reminds me of something like low fluid and air being sucked up. I have never worked on such transmissions and could use any help I could get.

If you can take the belt of, turn it inside out and visualy inspect the underside of belt to se if there are any cracks in it. Also with as much use of the tractor you used in the summer, belt could have gotten pretty warm, not hot, and stretched . I had that happen before with my 8hp x 26 inch snow thrower.

JT said: (quoted from post at 15:38:19 02/14/08) Boyd,

That is odd, because the transmissions in the L110 is half the transmission that the 266 toro used. But, if htat is what they told you, they know more about their product than I do, but it just seems odd they would tell you that when the L110 is a light lawn tractor and the 266 is a heavier Lawn & Garden tractor you can put a blade and a tiller on.

Jim

JT, you're half right....

Yes, the L110 is a lighter duty trans than the K61 - But it's not a K62. It's either a K46 or a T40 depending on the Serial Number. The LX series Deere's used the K62, which is likely mostly the same as a K61. I would make sure the fixed swashplate on the motor is in the same orientation from 61-62 though. Otherwise the forward/reverse pedals would be reverse/forward pedals.

jd b puller,
Now that make sense to me. The LX series Deere would be about the same framed tractor as the 260 series John Deere.

By chance if it is a 260 series Toro I found one on ebay listed by Joes Outdoor Power up in Michigan. He has a good reputation and parts out a lot of tractors on ebay.

I have a 266-H with a K61 in it. Trying to climb a steep hill it did nothing then all of a sudden jerked a little and started climbing. After that it started to leak slowly. Dealer wants about $1800 for a replacement K61 for my 266-H. I did some searches online and found several online warehouses selling K62 tranny for $150 to $200+. I did some measurements and the 4 mounting bolts (2 on each side of the transaxle) use the same spacing, axle shaft size and axle length as the K61. I bought a new overstock K62 specified for a JD L100 series tractor for a little over $200. I had to get a splined input pulley from JD. I will have to modify things a little to install it but I don't think it will be a huge undertaking. Hope you can fix yours. If yours is a Toro 260 series and you don't want to fix it and you are in or around Minnesota I might be interested in it for spare parts.

Boyd,
I will forewarn you, the K62 is a LOT lighter transmission than a K61, that is why you are buying a K62 for a couple hundred dollars, they do not hold up as well under the conditions most people use a tractor with a K61 in it.

I called the factory and they said the K62 was an improved and beefed up K61.

Ed,
Unfortunatly, that tractor is not designed to pull heavy loads, but does it make any kind of noise? Is it low on fluid, there is a resorvoir in front of the dash. Check your drive belt, it could be slipping a little, that is very common on belt driven equipment, especially if it is making no noise when you are running it, now if it is making a howling or growling noise, then more than likely you have some internal issues and there are no parts available to repair it.

The fluid is at the level it should be and the drive belt is still in great shape. The fluid we had to constantly add because of the hilly terrain we had to go over to get to the dirt made the fluid come out of the breather hole on the resorvoir cap. As far as noise it sounds the same as it has for years. Thanks for your quick reply and help.

Ed,
yes it might physically in great shape, but look close at it, the belt can be bad and look good. Also check the idler pivot arm and make sure belt is getting tight and staying tight. One thing on the belt, run your finger along the top on the side of belt to see if there is ridge, if there is, you belt is worn and that is what you are describing. That is a very common problem on Toro belt drive tractors.
