New points in my 1250 CC. Having trouble locating the timing mark on the flywheel. Carb side, round hole, all I can find is what may be "T", but might be just a line. Ran carb cleaner all around the flywheel while spinning the engine over, then blew it out with air. Shined a flashlight in the hole while slowly turning the engine over, this is all I"ve found. I set the points for this mark, seems to run OK, but now the point gap is only .009, down from .020 initial setting. Sound right to you guys? I"ve always had "SP" and "TD" for timing marks, using "SP" for the timing.

Thanks, R Bedell, I know how to do this, done it many times. My question has to do with the lack of a timing mark on the flywheel. Are there some that have only a line or a "T", or do they all have the SP and TD markings?

Oldrusty:

I have had some markings that were barely stamped into the flywheel. Only after cleaning and polishing the flywheel edge with 300 grit sandpaper, did I see the markings. Once I uncovered them, then I added a dab of paint for future reference.
