I have a JD 116 Riding Mower that I picked up last weekend and mowed my new yard (formerly a hay field) with it and noticed 2 things. If I hit a heavy patch of grass with it the mower deck would stop but the engine was still running strong and if I sat there the dec would slowly start spinning again. It didn"t change much if I went super slow or a normal speed. Could it be the clutch is going bad? or the belt is worn out? or I was just cutting too much? Also I noticed that the engine doesn"t seem to rev as high as I thought it should. It idles fine and if I put it at full throttle it seems to be at around 3/4 full speed. I had to replace the vaccuum fuel pump to get it started so it shouldn"t be that and it doesn"t change if I remove the fuel filter. I have also adjusted the carb on it to help get it started and running right. Do they just run a little slower or is there something not right?
Thanks for any ideas,
Adam

i came across a simular problem with friend"s 116.the wires to the clutch were grounding out at the clutch coil and kicking out the circuitbreaker.i put shrink tube over the bare spots and gobbed silicon around patch.seemed to work fine.an electric clutch for a 116 is $105.00 from john deere.

One Question
Did u jump start the tractor ????
116 tractors have a electric pto clutch and if battery is bad charging system doesant supply enough current to keep pto engaged due to bad battery
Clutch will slip causing ur problem

I'd replace deck belt 1st,also check for tight or very sloppy bearings on blade hubs & idler pulleys, belt is a cheap item to replace if you have to replace clutch you're talking big $,as far as eng speed, check throttle cable caseing where it clamps to block at carb,it may be loose or out of wack & you're not getting full travel on throttle mech
