I'm looking for info to service the transmission. The manual says it's a sealed unit and if I have a problem take it to the dealer. Well the mower is 5 yrs. old and I would like to service the trans. before there's a problem. I'm an experienced mech. (aircraft) and I need more info before I attempt this procedure.

find the maufacturer"s name and go to their site for the service specs. that tractor has a tuff-torq trans and runs on 10-30 as far as i can recall. only way to fill it is to drop it and open the fill plug. install it and fill it through the vent hole. follow the purge procedures and it should work.

I would go to your nearest JD dealer and ask their service dept. on changing the fluid. Ask for a copy of the procedure from their service manual. I have a Ward's 14hp tractor with hydrostaic drive that I bought new in 1971. I have changed the fluid twice. It has a full flow filter too that I changed when changing the fluid.
I used ATF fluid in it. It has hydraulic lift and uses the same oil from the hydrostatic unit.
The tractor was made by Gilson, I doubt if they're still in business. I've used it for plowing gardens, snow, hauling wood and mowing. Hal
