What is the recommended gap for this engine and tips for installing without a light?

They start at .020, the you have to have a timing light to get it correct. By not having a timing light, you may run out the engine out of time and by running out of time, you can blow a head gasket or blow a hole out in the head itself. You can go to Auto Zone and borrow a timing light if you do not have one. I have had them run anywhere from .017-.022 when properly timed, so a timing light is pretty critical.

Timing light, you have to set the points so they open at the timing mark on the flywheel, there are no exceptions to this at all. There can be a lot of variations due to wear on cam, wear of push rod, etc, so timing light is the only way to be 100$ accurate.

its true what JT said. i though i would be smart and set it with the light "this one time", measure the gap, then never have to use the light again. wrong. also, using a timing light seems to make the points last longer. 5 years old in my cub cadet 124, checked them this spring, clean with no pitting after 5 seasons of mowing.
