I am tring to get a mid 80's model JD 214 started. The engine will crank over but not start up. The lawn mower has been sitting for around. If it will start all we do is move snow with it. What could be wrong and need to try?

i dont know what kind of carb this trctor has but pull the bowl off of it and it may have some junk in it an a trick is to run a bread wrapper with the paper peeled off up through the center to clean it out

A simple (and free!!!) first thing I would check is the points to make sure contacts are clean. After sitting for a while, they may have corroded just enough to prevent proper operation. Easily cleaned with fine sandpaper or nailfile--set gap to .020 and hopefully it fires right up again. If it has spark, most likely gas has "soured" and need to clean out the old gas and refill with fresh. Take care & good luck--Paul

You need to pull the sparkplug and reconnect plug wire and hold the plug against the cylinder head.
Then have some crank the engine with ignition on
to see if there's any fire at the plug. Use a new plug for this test. If you have good fire
at the plug, pour about a teaspoon of fresh gas into the cylinder and reinstall plug & see if the engine runs.

If you don't have fire you need to clean the points as Paul suggested. The gap needs to be checked too. Then take a cotton swab and dip it in alcohol and clean the points. If any black
is on the swab, dip the the clean end and clean them again. If they're burnt replace them and clean them with alcohol using a swab. Hal
