I have 1997 JD Sabre 15.5 riding mower that we purchased new. The engine is a 15.5 Briggs & Stratton OHV. It has been well maintained w/ regular oil changes (30W), etc. This summer it has begun to use a lot of oil. I can use up to 16 oz of oil in a three hour mow. It does smoke a bit and you can smell the oil burning, especially under a load. Cold compression is 120 psi dry and 140 psi wet. There does not seem to be any changes in running or power. The mower works well like it always has. Do any of you have any ideas? Is this a ring issue? How long should one of these engines last with regular maintenance? Any and all input will be appreciated. Thank you.

Did you check the air filter and see if it is clean. The Briggs Inteck overhead valve engines have some history of blowing the head gasket between the push rod chamber and the cylinder. Usually this will blow behind the gasket so if you take off the head, you will look at the gasket and think it is good, a bad breather can cause oil consumption, but again, this has a hose from the breather to the air filter, so you should see some traces of oil in the air filter housing. Last but not least, check you dipstick o ring or any other place that can cause you engine to loose crankcase vacumn.

Usually 2 problems cause this, either oil ring broke or reed in crankcase breather went bad??

Please elaborate on the 'reed' in the crankcase breather. I have a twelve horse Briggs' behaving the same as first post. I do have a bit of oil in carburetor neck.
Thanks, Sam

Sam, If this is an OHV engine, then you could have a blown head gasket, the breather is behind the carb, with a hose from the breather to the carb air cleaner base on OHV engines, flat head engines will have the breather tube going directly into the carb body. You can take that off and rattle it, if it rattles, it is good. If it is not an OHV engine, good chance you have a crankcase vacumn leak causing your probelm, could be a dipstick O ring, this is very common.

Thanks for the info. I knew there was hose from the crankcase to the carb. but didn't know it had a valve.
Sounds like a PCV on a auto.
