JD 214 - Won't cut

I bought a JD 214 at a silent auction (sight-unseen) and it turned out to be in terrible condition. With a lot of help from my uncle, we got it running. When I finally went to use it, it ran fine and cut for about 1 pass. Then it made a terrible noise, white smoke came out, and it stopped cutting. It will still drive, but it will not cut.

Any suggestions? Should I put it up on ramps and look underneath? (Not that I know what I am looking for since the owner's manual -- which I had to purchase online -- doesn't discuss the deck part at all! And I am pretty sure we changed the drive belt when we were fixing it up.)(Oh, and my neighbor who was outside when it stopped cutting thought maybe something had frozen up.)

I would check both the flat and v-idler pulley under the engine that powers the primary belt. These idlers are tensioned with a treaded rod and spring at the front of the machine.

Link

If you will copy and paste the above web address, it will at least get you to the parts books fro you rtractro and deck, and it does show how the deck belt is routed. Hope this helps you.

You need the deck manual, too. in reply to SwingKitten, 08-14-2005 16:50:25
It is separate, and I haven't seen one on eBay. I agree with the earlier suggestion about checking on deck bearings.

Ooh! one thing to check first! Pull the top plate off the deck, the one that hides the deck belt. Those belts can come off and make exactly the kind of problem you have. The belt routing is kind of odd, and the tensioner is strange. Go look at one that works and take a digital picture of it, then go hame and make yours the same.
