Sears lawn tractor backfires

I have a Sears LT1000 riding mower with 20h Briggs and Stratten engine. It has had it's yearly preseason maintenance and it has about six mowings this season. I was mowing my lawn this evening when the engine began backfiring at irregular intervals. I checked my fuel and it was almost empty. I refueled and the same backfiring continued. Checked for loose wires, pulled and checked the plugs - same results. Anybody have any ideas?

Yup, I've delt with 2 Sears mowers with B&S motors and both backfired sometimes.
A little Marvel Mystery oil might help as might a little Seafoam, but not both in the same tank I think. If you're lucky that'll cure it and you won't need a carb rebuild.

pull your choke out just a little, see if that helps. Sounds as thought you have a lean fuel problem, that will cause backfiring.

Try a new plug, cheapest thing to start with. I replace my kohler plug every season whether it needs it or not.

sounds like you may have a little water in the gas .you may also chk the wires to see if the insulation rubbed of causing it to touch the frame.you did say you put a new plug huh.try that good luck.

I have one just like it (a 2004 model) with the 18 HP Intek Briggs & Stratton.

Check the "Seat Switch", because mine started that when you would even "Lean" slightly to the right or left, to compesate for mowing on a slight grade in the yard, it would take "just enough" of your weight off of the seat to cause the motor to cut off momentarily, and when you would sit back down firmly, it would backfire!
