Wheels frozen on Snow Blower Axle

We purchased a Snow Blower this past winter and the wheels are rusted on the axle. The wheels each have pins in them so that they can be loosened by removing the pins. This would allow us to transport it easier.

Do any of you on the forum have some suggestions in regard to loosening the wheels? I have tried hammering on them lightly but that does not seem to do the trick.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try mixing brake fluid and 2 stroke oil about 70-30 more brake and use this mix it's a great rust buster and cheap.

I don't know if anyone will agree with me but sometimes you will NEVER get it free. We had a Gilson rear tined tiller that we soaked and beat on so long the guy gave it to us(9 months). Being the type of guy with the "I can do it" attitude, I cut the wheels off with a saw-zall, saved the shaft, and put on Ariens wheels with pnematic tires. I've got a 724 Toro two-stage, that I've got the quick pins out of the axle, that I use for a snowblower(with and without chains). I use all types of "spray and pray" on it every year since we took it in on trade(1992) and they(either side) never broke free. Some repair jobs,I've cut them off at the axle, heated them cherry red and in the arbor press I still couldn't get the stub to move. But yes, some do come apart. An aircraft bit and drilling between the axle and the wheel help get rust penatrant down there. GOOD LUCK and keep beat'in

had exact same problem with old Sears, have to be careful not to ruin the wheel

soak both sides of the wheel/axle join with PB Blaster, spray every 3-4 hours for several days, wipe excess PB off the rubber unless you plan to replace the tires

with pin out, use old deep socket (expendable one) that will just slip over axle and rest on edge of wheel rim

beat the snot out of that socket with 5lb sledge until wheel moves just a smidgen, re-spray with PB Blaster and let it sit a while

once you get it moving, you are 85% done and can usually spin it off by hand, K-roil is said to work even better but I have never used it

If all of the above does not work, the only thing left is to heat with an oxy./act. torch and heavy hammering.

I have had luck with pulling the drive pins out and soake the area with Kroil oil and then using the unit to power the wheels - pushing against a tree or truck / tractor plow or other solid part ( augers stopped ) - the weight of the unit on concrete gives good traction and the axle spins in the wheels.

Try PB Blaster on both sides of wheel leave over night.
