I just had spring maintenance done on my LT133 and they said that the governor needed to be replaced. It is only 5 years old and I have kept the maintenance up to date. It starts and shuts off perfectly. Are they trying to take me because I am a woman?

john deere will take this very seriously. they want loyal customers, and wont tolerate dealers messing this up. thats why people will pay more for john deere brand motor oil than other name brands. and why deere makes a fortune selling caps, toys, etc. when i worked for a deere lawn equipment dealer, the policy was deere paid 10% ABOVE our shop labor rates for warranty repairs. they didnt want their loyal customers waiting in line for repairs. and i still dont understand how they could have broken the governor. engine speed adjustments are made externally, and unless your was running way fast, i would have just made a quick check of top speed and idle speed. sounds like an inexperienced mechanic got ahold of your machine, then tried to cover up his mistake.

I just called them and they were really hateful to me. They determined that they broke the governor when they were doing the spring maintenance and they were not going to charge me for the governor (thanks to all of you). But they replaced belts and blades that they were going to charge me. My mower is only 5 years old and I do not think that they needed replacement. I am very uncomfortable with the way that they do business. Thanks once again for all of you!

while a case may be made for belts and blades at 5 years, i question how they "broke" the governor while servicing it. most of us do our own service, and may choose to run a belt til it brakes, but the dealer is supposed to service it properly and may have been right to change them. but the governor? its inside the engine, its almost the last thing to take out if you were to completely disassemble it. its a gear with weights on it, allows the engine speed to remain fairly constant under varying loads. i"d find another dealer, or an honest independant.

The main reason that I purchased a John Deere from a John Deere dealer was the machine's reputation since I am a single lady and wanted dependability since I have two acres to mow. Yes, he said it was inside the engine, and he got real hateful with me (the owner!) I told him that after I got it back they would not do service on my mower again. Trying to charge me for something before admitting it was their fault. He did the analogy that if my wife dropped and broke a glass in the kitchen, would I be made at her for the rest of her life? I said that is not the point - the point is that they broken something and wanted to charge me for their error.

And when I get it back, I am not only going to contact the John Deere company but also the Better Business Bureau.

I want to sincerely thank you for all you have helped me with and there is an independent mechanic in the town I live in. I just thought that a John Deere dealer would do me right.

I want to thank you all so much for confirming my thoughts about this. You gave me the necessary information that I needed to back me up. This group is really great! Yes, it was a John Deere dealer who services my mower, and yes, I will let them know about it.

the only times i"ve seena governor needing to be replaced it came apart. and the engine runs real fast, you"d definately notice that. and they wouldnt send it out the door telling you it needed replacing. i hope a deere dealer isnt telling you this...john deere takes a very dim view of this sort of thing. they are very proud of their rep of taking care of customers. let us know what happens.

Sandra,
Ask the person whom informed you it needed a governor replaced why it needs replaced. The onlt time I normally see them go out if the engine blows up, and the flying parts destroy the gear. I really sounds like a con job to me, but I am not there. My email is unhid if you want to email me as to their answer why it needs replaced and I will help answer your questions on this.
Jim

Probably.

On the other hand, considering that there are very few men out there who are mechanically inclined or willing to apply themselves, it may not be that you are a woman, but rather the salesman are playing the odds that you are just an average American.

While there is a small chance for a problem governor, (there was a service recall on a production run of a certain briggs engine), it will reveal itself in not responding to an increasing load (engine will kill if you get into tall grass rather than trying to compensate for the load by opening the throtle), or engine goes faster than it ought to when throttle "floored" (governor is supposed to limit the engine speed to about 2000RPM to 2500 RPM.)

If it does show these signs at all and adjustments do not correct them, the shop is going to charge a lot of money, because they have to open up the engine. An FFA student or a Boy Scout looking to adda a merit badge might be the best way to deal with it if it does show a problem.
