I have an old John Deere 214 that still mows and runs pretty good but the transaxle is getting extremely noisy. Is it worth fixing? What is involved in making it run quiet again? Thanks for any info.

Yes, it is worth rebuilding, the old 100-200 series JD are virtually indestructable. Before you go to JD looking for parts, check a Peerless dealer, it might be a little cheaper. I have never seen a tranny like this that was real expensive to fix. But I buy everything through Peerless and not JD

The whole line from 210 through 216, as well as the newer 110/112 used the Peerless 2300 transaxle. A good used one goes for around $100 on eBay.

Toro used a Peerless like it with an added high-low shifter but I am not sure they interchange. The high-low with the variator would be pretty versatile.

I hope you have deep pockets. The trans on my 210 went and it would cost between $900 and $1200 for a new one from Deere. Parts to fix it would have been in the $700 range. Mine was noisy, then it just locked up in 3rd gear one day and would not move. I pulled the trans apart and lots of little metal pieces came falling out. Most of the gears had the teeth completely gone. Ended up getting a new hydrostat to get away from the gear drives...

It was quiet at one time? Now I'm wondering about mine. Eveyone I talk to say theirs is real noisy too. Mine howls when going more that 2 miles per hour. They can be rebuilt for sure, their one heck of a transmission. I would venture to guess it's the differential gears. They are large straight cut gears and with a little wear get noisy.
You can get repair manuals for them, they are $9 and cover most transmission made by Peerless.
Mine is a 210 and take for granted yours is the same Peerless line.
