My mower has developed a problem. On the top of the carb, there is a little tube (part M115341 on JD parts page). When the engine runs, gas flows out of this tube (and onto the muffler). It was working fine until I leaned the mower over at about 45 degrees to work on the electic clutch (broken pully - anther story)(the engine wasn't running). The float seems ok (I took the bowl off to have a look). Any ideas?

What you describe is just an overflow tube. If the engine is running ok and doesn"t seem to have any other problems you probably created a siphon when you leaned the mower to the side. If the condition doesn"t correct itself the carburetor may have to be removed and the ports cleaned out. Before doing that try LIGHTLY blowing air back through the overflow tube. Have always raised riding mowers from the front or rear to alleviate problems such as this. If the mower must be tipped to the side always lean with the air cleaner up.
