I have a 15HP craftsman hydrostatic - about 7-8 years old with kohler engine. I have no manuals as this was bought used and previous owner had nothing left of them. I'm looking for info on how to check and change the hydrostatic fluid, what fluid to use, and if there is any filter that can be put on these. The company that now sells the manuals ( including the safety manual which is under some law to be give out free, I was told by a local small engine shop) tells nothing about what is in them but demands $25-$45 for you to buy it just to find out. thanks for the info.

Did you ever get an answer on this? I have the same model of mower. I am having trouble with mine. I stood the mower up to change the blades and now the mower will not go forward or reverse. I let it sit for a while and it got better. Now it moves some, but the transmission is roaring.

Thanks

I have a craftsman tractor from that same era with a 15.5 HP Kohler and the rear end is sealed and not meant to have the fluid changed.

That is exactly the point Hans. hydraulic fluid wears out by oxidation and fracture and saponification of its main components, and by deterioration of its additives, and thus loses its performance properties. heat, contaminants, and age cause this. if the fluid is left in there with no change, it will eventually allow the torque converter mechanism and other parts to deteriorate and fail. it can also leak out or become contaminated with water. its cheaper to build it this way and it guarantees that the user will not be able to keep the machine running for a long time if he follows the rules and doesnt ever change the fluid. its just not that hard to change the fluid but I dont have any info on what the fluid is. probably similar to power steering fluid which isprobably what I will top off or replace with. my speed seems to be falling a little with age and the levers are all in correct positions so the hydro section is what I suspect. I have cleaned oil adhered debris from it a number of times so I know it has been leaking vrey slightly at the axle seals and other places. this has to be expected for this design so, its time to check/change/add fluid.
