My John Deere LX188 won't move. I drove it in the shop to change the drive belt and pulleys, as it seemed to slip under load and now that I have replaced them it simply won't move at all. The pulley on the transaxel is spinning and when you push in on the pedal it does kind of make a whining sound like it does when it works. Another thing the rear wheels free wheel. You're supposed to pull a little lever out in the back to get them to free wheel but it does it all the time. I have checked and the lever seems to be working in and out like it should. The resivour on the hydrostat oil looks like it is too full. Would that cause a problem? I don't have the mower completely back together, I still have the seat (switch jumpered) the fenders and the deck off. Is there something in there that needs to be hooked up? I don't think so but I am running out of ideas. Help! Jeff

Yes the one on the hydro is splined and the belt and pulleys are running just fine.

had an lx188 in the shop for same issue. turned out to be a roll pin on input control shaft, under the pulley. a buddy worked on it. will ask him what he did. think he just replaced pin. next bet would be proper routing then check tension spring.

Hope your mower is fixed by now, if not you do have big problems. Was looking for parts on the internet when I wandered across this site. Don"t suppose you took off the rear wheels. If the axle keys aren't replaced you will get the symptoms you described. Also the oil reservoir should NOT be overfilled and I believe the spec calls for Lo-viscosity Hy-Gard, do NOT use engine oil or you will be replacing or rebuilding the transmission.
