I just brought home a Sears garden tractor with a 42 (?) inch deck and rear lift kit. The seller was repairing it for some guy who skipped town. Since the seller had $100 in parts into it, that was all he wanted! I jumped it and it runs fine. The ignition switch sysyem doesn't work and most of the safety overides have been by-passed. The mower sat outside for about a year and is frozen. I am sure I can knock it loose and regrease. I am very pleased with the tractor. Here's my questions. The hood is not present so I only have the manufactur's code to go by. It is a model 917 259 41 serial number 5278. It has an overhead cast iron engine which i believe is a Kohler (?) number 143-740022 serial 4075E but the starter says Tecumseh (the number on the starter is 33835 15025). What make, year, etc is the tractor. Is the engine a Kohler 16 hp? Are manuals available for the engine and tractor and mower? I forgot to look for a number on the mower. Anybody have a hood?

Thanks.

Nick

One of the last heavy duty, true garden tractors sold by Sears.

The 917 identifies the maker. Older Sears garden equipement with a 917 prefix was built by David Bradley. Roper bought out Bradley, and I would say that your mower is a Roper.

I tracked down some info. The tractor is a 1976 ST 16. It is a Tecumseh model OH 160. Now for all of you... Tell me about these tractors. Any problems to be aware of? Good rides?

Nick
