HYDRO-GEAR NOT WORKING AFTER FLUID CHANGE

Tried to change fluid on 10 year old Cub Cadet 1730 with Hydro-Gear 717-3048 belt driven hydro transaxle. Lowest thing that looked like a drain plug turned out to be a check valve. Drained about 12 oz of fluid out of there, replaced and refilled with Cub Cadet "Drive system Fluid Plus". Tractor will barely go foreward and will not go at all in reverse. Worked fine before. Any ideas?

Hi Gary K.
I have the same tractor and pump. I too removed the bottom check valve to change the fluid. The problem with doing this is that the ball and spring that falls out is very difficult to get back in correctly. If it does not go back together right, the tractor will NEVER go in reverse as this check valve is what controls the pump in reverse. If you purged the air out of the pump using Doug McClain's procedure above and it still will not go in reverse, the problem is that the ball did not go where it is supposed to. It is laying in the port where the fluid goes. Don't panic, you don't have to open the pump up. But you do have to remove it from the machine. Once you do this, remove the plug (Which is really a plug) adjacent to the check valve and shake out the ball. Use a magnet to get the spring out if need be. Turn the pump over and drop the ball in and then put the spring and the plug back in. Now reinstall the pump in the tractor. Fill with IH hydraulic oil (DO NOT USE synthetic oil in a pump that has been used and not had synthetic oil in it)and do Doug McClain's procedure to purge the air out of the pump. Hope this helps you out.

Hydro-Gear Transaxles need to be purged of air after changing the transaxle fluid.
Here are the purging directions per my owners manual.
1. Place tractor safely on level surface with engine off and parking brake set.
2. Disengage transmission by placing "freewheel control" in freewheel position. (See "TO TRANSPORT" in this section of manual.)
3. Sitting in the tractor seat, start engine. After the engine is running, move throttle control to slow position. With motion control lever in neutral (N) position, slowly disengage the clutch/brake pedal.
4. Move motion control lever to full forward position and hold for five (5) seconds. Move lever to full reverse position and hold for five (5) seconds. Repeat this procedure three (3) times.
NOTE: During this procedure there will be no movement of the drive wheels, The air is being removed from the hydraulic drive system.
6. Move motion control lever to neutral (N) position. Shut off the engine and set the parking brake.
7. Engage transmission by placing "freewheel control" to the drive position. (See "TO TRANSPORT" in this section of manual.)
8. Sitting in the tractor seat, start the engine. After the engine is running, move throttle to one half (1/2) speed. With motion control lever in the neutral (N) position, slowly disengage the clutch/brake pedal.
9. Slowly move motion control lever forward, after tractor moves approximately five (5) feet, slowly move the motion control lever to the reverse position. After tractor moves backwards approximately five (5) feet, return the motion control to the neutral position. Repeat the forward and backward procedure three times to finish purging the air from the hydraulic drive system.
10. All air should now be purged from the Hydro-Gear transaxle, and it should be ready for normal operation.

Yahoo groups has a Cub Cadet group. You probably will have better luck over there with the C.C. smart guys.
