1720 Cub Cadet problem

I've got a 1720 Cub Cadet and the transaxle is junk. It's hydrostatic too. It only has a little over 300 hours on it and the transaxle has been taken apart twice to replace the differential. I'd like to find a different transaxle to put in this because the one it has is so cheaply made, I can't believe Cub Cadet would even sell something like this with their name on it. It has a 17 horsepower, vertical shaft Kohler engine. If anybody has had this same problem or knows of a different transaxle that will fit that's stronger than the original, I'd appreciate the advice. Thanks.

Scott,
I have a 1988 CC 1720 which I purchased used 2 1/2 years ago. The transaxle just stop working and makes a grinding sound. I dimantled it twice and can not find the problem. All of the gears are meshing and in good shape. The problem is in the hydraulic unit which tough to figure out. Cub wants $500.00 for a new one and I paid $550.00 for the whole tractor used. It is pretty steep when your are unemployed and have 2 acres to mow. If anyone has a suggestion, I would love to hear it.

you've come to the right place for answers. the gears are not the problem. in fact the pump is not likely the problem either. the linkage is the likely culprit. the way the pump is designed, the forward/reverse shaft has very little movement to affect whether the unit goes or doesn't. if there is any play in the lever connection or the linkage from the dash back to the lever, than the unit will just sit there and sound like it's grinding gears. (it is actually the pistons in the pump allowing a small amount of fluid to flow from them. the "valve" on these is a rocker assembly which allows the pistons in the pump to release their fluid in one direction or the other. there really isn't a valve at all inside the pump. there are two sets of these pistons mounted on cylinders which turn on shafts that extend out of the pump and into the transaxle. one is for input from the pulley and the other is to provide forward or reverse movement to the tranny itself. If the fluid isn't the right viscosity (90 weight or better) or has water in it (which causes foaming to occur), the hydro fluid will not move the output shaft. Your problem is either the fluid type or the linkage. You can remove/rebuild/replace the hydro pump in less than two hours if you are slow. The wear parts cost around $17.00 at the dealer and are sold in a kit (seal kit). I can get you the part number if the dealer is lazy.

I have had a 1720 bought new in 1988 and have no problems and I have many more hours than you do. That should be a sunstrand unit and able to be fixed. I would suggest taking it to a quality repair facility, preferably a CC dealer that has good volume and get an estimate.
