I have an 18 hp Kohler Command engine that backfires very loud after it is shut off. What could the problem be? Thanks,
Terry

We have a 20 horse Kohler Command and I can assure you that its nothing to worry about. Idle it to low throttle before you kill it. That should solve your problem

Check your exhaust valves. They may be burnt and not seating correctly

be sure to let it idle a few before you shut it off,,it sounds like you may be shutting her down with the rpms to high and fill the muffler with gas and then pow!! if it still does it then the fuel selinoid in the carb may be defective not cutting off gas flow when you turn the key off,,there may be an o-ring on it that is torn also,,,lucas

my dad has a 1970 wheel horse with a 16hp kohler and he adjusted the valves and rebuilt the carb and it stopped backfiring
