I will try another posting. I have a 1982 Craftsman Tractor. It has a 20 HP Onan engine and I have established that the tractor is actually a Roper. My transaxle has packed it in and rather than rebuild it, I would like to throw a used one in. I cannot prove what type of transaxle it is. Everyone tells me it is a peerless but I bought the manual for peerless transaxles and mine is not there. It may be a peerless, but it isn't included in the manual. I can go to the Fridgidaire website and type in part numbers from my Sears manual and have the parts appear as a stock item. Since Fridgidaire bought out Roper which bought out AYP, is my transaxle still a peerless or something else? It has a 3 forward, 1 reverse gearing with Hi and Lo. There are no markings on the transaxle or casing.

your transaxle is a roper transaxle, you can still get parts for it under roper part #'s thru a co. like dixie sales. get me a fax# and i can get you a parts breakdown and part #'s. that transaxle is still made today in some different case configs. but internally pretty much the same look at husky gear drive garden tractors, sears, and american yard products at some of the home improvement stores . go to a dealer and see if they have any old dead sears tractors lying around they have been using that transaxle since about 1968 they are a very good unit to purchase parts from dixie sales you have to go thru a dealer ship.

I have a sears tracter
917-250032
Onan Engine
sears diagrams show the transaxle is a AYP.
I want to change gear oil, since it is howling a little. But I do not know what to put in it.
It has a tag on one of the bolts. So is this a limited slip type, which takes a different gear oil. I hope you can help me, I need to know what oil to put in it.
PLEASE AND THANK-YOU
CHRIS

I don't have a fax number anymore so unless you want to send me mail with the info. I am really interested in a transaxle manual. The general manual is too basic and seems to lack gears and shafts that are in the transaxle. In addition, I need only replace my broken axle which I could have made up for much less than the purchase cost through Sears, but I wanted to throw in a used transaxle to give me some time. I can get a transaxle from a gentleman in Michigan, but shipping it here to Manitoba would cost about $50-75 US, let alone the additional cost of the used transaxle.

Well, te good news is most of what mught be wrong with it is still available from www.jackssmallengines or Ray's mowers in PA, check postings for address. The bad news is that these units are AYP manufactured and are not in any way shape or form Peerless. I just replaced some bearing in mine, and Jacks hooked me up
Good luck

I only have needle bearing cups at the end of the shafts. One axle sheared off and I don't currently have the facilities to rebuild it 'cleanly' until I move soon. The axles ride on bushings.

The transaxle in the earlier Roper tractors that are 3 speed with reverse and high and low range were built by Tecumseh. Hope this little bit of info can help.....Andy
