I have a 1974 sears SS12 lawn tractor with an HH120 tecumseh engine. I can't buy parts from anybody but sears without the tecumseh type # ect. The Sears Model # is 143.602022. The serial # is 9268. There is also another number on it which is 08196. Can anybody cross-refersence the Sears numbers and find the Tecumseh numbers?

I have a 6.5hp craftman self-propelled lawn mower that needs a new block.
Mdl# is 143.986500
Family #VTP195U1G1SA
Do you have a current cross reference for these numbers, I have not been able to locate one? Thank you for any help you can give. Jesse.

Your engine crosses to Tecumseh HH120-120107C.

I don't know about the latest editions, but the older issues of "Small Engine Repair Manual" had several pages in the Tecumseh section which listed the various Sears engines (with the complete 143.????? number) and told which basic Teke engine they were. You might try this route. Good Luck!

Brian,

I also have an SS12. It has a grader blade mounted underneith and has been used for landscaping since we got it 15 years ago.

When I rebuilt the engine I simply went to my local air cooled engines suppy house and told them I had the Techumseh HH120. This seemed to be enough info for them to order the gaskets etc that I needed. I have a Tecumseh horizontal shaft engine manual that covers the HH120 (also from the local supply house).

Your e-mail comes in a timely fashion. I went to order a traction drive belt from Sears the other day and found that they have centralized parts ordering and the operators know nothing unless you provide a 143 number. I have never been able to locate the Sears number on my tractor and I have no idea what year it is. In the past I have always told them that it is a Roper model 762M and that has done the trick - not any more! I ended up buying a Dayco Lawn and Garden Belt, number L582 ($21.00), as suggested by my air cooled shop. Works well.

Some questions for you:

1. Where is the Sears number located on the tractor?
2. Is the year and serial number printed on the same plate?

Thanks,

Dwight

Dwight:
I had the same problem. My "sears" number on the shift plate was obliterated. Some one gave me a number from his tractor and it has been helpful. This may not be an exact match but give it a try.

Go to www3.sears.com
type in 917.22510 or 917.22520 and hit "go"
left click on "Sears Super 12 Tractor"
left click on "page 4". (Check out the other pager to.)
item 40 is the drive belt. It's sears number is 6474H. But you're probably better off buying from a local source. I've found that most everything is "no longer available".
If you open the other window that appears when page 4 comes up with your parts list, you can "right click" on the picture and save it and "insert" it in a Powerpoint file thereby always having a copy of it.
John

Dwight,

The tractor model# and serial # should be on the model # plate which also doubles a the shift patten diagram located around the shifting lever. The numbers that I was refering to were the seperate engine serial & model #'s which is loacted on a plate on the front side of the shroud. As far as the year, in all honesty, I'm not entirely sure. I'm only relying on what the previous owner related to me. My grandfather had a 72 and was pretty close to this one in assembly so the 74 year seemed to make sense.

Whenever possible, I try to buy aftermarket parts as they are usually cheaper then going through sears. Items such as belts are off-the shelf items that you can get at Auto supply stores. I belive a lot of the bearings are the same way. I appreciate you imput, Dwight. I hope I was abble to answer your questions

Brian

Anybody I ever dealt with used the sears number since they are specific motors. The sears used a diferent govenor for instance on the last one I built. Give a call around to local shops. They have never had a problem finding parts. HH120, is that similar to the HVM120 overhead valve motor? I just did one of those this spring.
