I have a Lawn General garden tractor and the thang started acting up yesterday..at full throttle the engine revs up and down..and backfires constantly...same thing happens when I put it at idle, engine is about to die and it revs up, engine is about to die then it revs up...I replaced the fuel filter, spark plug and air filter..I even fooled around with the one carb screw that I could see, it did nothing at all..Help...

Sounds like it,s starving for fuel. Check for fuel flow restrictions between the tank and the carb. If all's well there, pull the float bowl off and check for crud and/or water. Check and clean the float needle and seat and shoot some carb clean in and through your jets and air bleed passages especially the float bowl vent. [Watch your eyes 2+2 burns]

at bottom of carb is there a big screw if you turn that in a bit it should smooth out and run ok I think it tends to vibrate loose at least it does on my 8 hp tecumseh. regards

I would go Kohler or Onan (20hp)....I have all three....I will not buy another Brigg's,they have gone the way of many good products, living on there past good name.....I haven't had to buy parts .....just maintence, oil and air filters, spark plugs ..... .I don't use the Brigg's,It's a 3hp.pull start...starts after about 30 pulls been that way since new.....
