V Twin leaking valve covers.

I have a later model cub cadet V twin, with the leaking valve covers.
(No gaskets from the factory, only sealant that failed.) Going to put
either cork, or other aftermarket gaskets in. Bolts are star drive.
Don't want the grip to strip, or heads to snap off. Which would be
better, warmed up motor, or leave it cold, when removing the bolts ? Is
an impact driver necessary ?

The "star" head is a torx. I just use a torx socket on a 3/8 rachet, a good whack on the handle with your hand will break them loose. I have never had one strip doing it that way. I usually do it on a cold engine so most of the oil will have drained back as to not make a big mess when taking the cover off.

If it is a Kohler, Kohler has an update kit that puts the same plastic valve covers with o-rings in them the Kohler Command line of engines use and I have never had one come back that leaked again.

Yes, it is a Kohler, but it's old enough to have metal valve covers. I think it's around 10 years old. Being metal, I thought cork might be best, for an oil leak. Seams the o ring replacement covers you mentioned were quite pricey.

What I am saying is replace the metal covers with the plastic ones in the kit. That will solve your problem.
