Case 444 Coil Wire melted

I have a 79 Case 444. During the summer, I went to start it and the wire that goes from the ignition switch to the coil went up in smoke and melted.

I got busy and put it in the back of the garage and just used my 8N and riding lawn mower until now when I need the 444 for snow removal. I m planning to figure it out and get it going on Saturday. Can anyone give me an idea of where to start? It s a new coil but it could be Chinese garbage. Just hoping that I could get a good starting point.

I am assuming battery ignition with points and condenser:

If you have an ohm meter, check for continuity between the terminal where the wire burnt up on the coil and the case of the coil. Make sure
it is not shorted. I am thinking there should be no other wires on that terminal, either.

I will do that. And if it s not?

One can smoke that wire and the points if the key is left on when the points are closed. Other than that I'd suspect a dead short in the coil primary.
