JD 316 and some general Onan info desired

Looking at a JD 316 (Onan power) with "no spark" the owner says he purchased it that way and has never seen it run. It includes a mower deck that doesn't look too bad and the tractor seems to be in pretty fair condition. He's asking $350 negotiable. I'm familiar with Kohler K series engines having rebuilt several in the past but have VERY little knowledge regarding the 16 HP Onan engines.

FYI I own a 316 that has been repowered with a B&S 17HP Vanguard. I see the repower kits now run over $2000. Any other repower options out there?

What critical knowledge should I have about the Onan 16 HP 2-cyl engines? -------or should I run the other direction. I don't really even need the tractor, just something to putter away on this winter.

The 316 Onan is similar to the 318 with a smaller Onan, manual steering, and fewer hydraulic circuits.
A later 316 might have a 18 horsepower Onan.

''Troubleshooting an Onan non-runner gets complicated.''

I'd like to hear what you mean by that?

Unless the engine has been changed his serial number (288,836) would have a simple Kettering ignition system with breaker points.

The FIRST things to do would be to verify that battery voltage is reaching the ignition coil and that the breaker points are clean and making contact and gapped correctly.

Is this a P series Onan or a B series. It should have a B if original but many have been changed. Finding that info is the first step in figuring out what may be bad in the ignition.

One has no points, but an electronic trigger under the flywheel and different coils.

Yep, exactly!

And whether it is the original engine breaker points or a replacement engine with EI the FIRST thing to check would be that battery power is getting to the (+) terminal on the coil when the ignition switch is ''ON'', as both systems require that.
