the oil filter I used om Kohler 26 hp is about 1/2 shorter than standard filter. WILL THAT HURT ME ENGINE/

There are 2 lengths to Kohler filters, a long one and a short one for close spaces.

I use the same filter as used on my Dakota its longer buy thsts not a problem

There was a Youtube video on the (I think) 39 hp. Kohler where the customer installed a shorter filter that OEM and the back of it it sealed off the return tube going up into the filter. That filter ruined that engine.

Part #? I need a filter, may have a Chrysler filter on hand.

I think i cross referenced it to a 1348 WIX/NAPA Gold previously.

The filter I use is a NAPA 21516

I think the last 2 OEM digits are -01 or -02 with one (I forget) referencing the short filter and the other the long. I have used both and see no reason to use one over the other unless fit is a problem. I use synthetic oil and change annually so the oil really doesn't get all that dirty if one is worrying about plugging up the filter media and opening the overpressure valve in the bottom of the filter.
