poor steering tractors

I do a little tractor repair. I've found several of the better known brands steer like a Mack truck with the steering belt off. Kubota
1440, Cub Cadet 125, Cadet 2185 to mention a few. All were greased and tire pressures were up but steer like a tank. Much like a
neutered dog, I don't get it. I remember the early Simplicity's steered OK. Deere 110's steered OK. Did I turn into a wimp or just
spoiled by my Kubota Zero Turn ?

My experience is none of them steer great when not moving. If they don't turn easy when in motion, there is something wrong. My current B7100 Kubota and former 446 Case could be tuned easily with a ball once in motion.

I've found a lot of older machines has the spindles bent so that camber was way off, causing hard steering

The Ross steering box at the bottom of the steering column might need cleaned up and/or rebuilt.
There is a lot of information available on the weekend freedom machines website or the only cub cadets website.
It's not difficult once you get the steering column out of the frame.

Other trouble spots are the spindles which need grease every blue moon, and any place there are linkage joints.

Poor mans power steering.

You are a lucky dog - OR - You got arms like Dwayne Johnson.. I tried a friends Cadet, a 105 and it steered like crap and he liked
it...

Cub Cadet 104, 129, Bolens 650, Sears, John Deere 140, Wheel horse never were hard turning.

I have Cub Cadets 70, 123, 124, 125, 126, 129 and 149. Also have a Cadet 76. Of them, the 70 is the best steering with the narrow front tires and lower overall weight. The worst is the 125 but it hasn't always been hard steering. My grandmother bought it new in 1969 and it has several thousand hours of use on it. It got worse as it got more worn out. The 126 was used only for mowing and steers very easily. The 129 has a tiller and on it and steers easily. The only ones I've had steering issues with are the ones that are really worn and in need of service/repair.
