6 hp BS Recoil?

The starter rope on my tiller pulled out today. It looks like the cover is actually pop riveted to the frame of the engine. Can that be true? Looks like I will have to drill out the rivets to get to the pulley. Am I missing something here?

On my tiller the starter was riveted to the side cover. About 4 or 5 screws and it's in your hands. Easier to drill out the rivets on the bench. You can buy the whole starter assembly and bolt it on or buy a kit with the rope, a new spring, and a handle. Think a new starter ready to go was around $15.

Why not just take off the cowl and replace the rope?

On my B&Ss the recoil is riveted to the fan shroud but the spring and rope are accessed from the back once the shroud is removed (usually 3 bolts).

You do not need to drill the rivets.
Just remove the fan shroud and replace the rope.
